In theory, I would love to be a leader but I know I'm a much better footsoldier than a General. If I'm into your deal then I'll shout it from the rooftops to bring more people on board. There are a few little New Jersey punk bands (although I live in Liverpool, UK) that I stumbled upon that I've been trying to spread the word about, the fact that they make it look like they recognise my efforts inspires me to shout even louder. The reason for my efforts is that I'm made to feel part of the story, which, however insignificantly, makes a tiny little mark in the world that I was here, and I was part of that Tribe.
I recognised this while reading "Tribes" by Seth Godin, which is all about creating communities around a common love, or cause. It's the thing that makes people queue up from silly o'clock in the morning to get a brand new phone that you can't plug any headphones into or pitch in $20/£20 for a really niche project that wouldn't otherwise exist. It's for that special connection to a thing that you just 'get', and feel, on some level, it 'gets' you.
If you're working on a project with an element of community backing, I strongly encourage you to give Tribes a read. It's not very long, it's VERY American (I'm English, and there's only so much enthusiasm we allow in a sentence. I hope this is received with the mirth with which it is typed), but/and It's very inspiring. If you want people to believe in your project, it's good if they can see their reflection in it and Seth's book lays out a pretty simple framework of how to play the tune that leads the giddy villages on your journey with you.
I'm rambling now, but if you're looking for a starting point to launch a project, and to attract some attention, that book is a handy little claxon.
So if you've got some passion, and you've made it this far, I'm 'good people' to have on your team, so let me in and I'll see if I can offer anything. Maybe if I can get my ducks in a row you could return the favour, but let's see how we go.
Cheers, Jamie
Thank you so much, Ted!!’. For your wonderful words. It made me smile.
