Writer-Director Ally May recently won Best Narrative Short in the Toronto International Women Film Festival and Best Director in Female Feedback Film Festival. Her multiple films have placed in notable festivals including the Oscar qualifying HollyShorts, Flicker Rhode Island International Film Fest and the Catalina Film Festival.
Ally’s brand is haunting thrillers and dramas with emotionally stunted characters. She has an eye for finding the beauty in tragedy and the humor in struggle.
Her childhood was filled with trauma, abuse and violence. With chaos all around her, she turned to movies for comfort and learned to tell herself stories. Later, she started telling other people her stories. This led to a BA in American Literature with a focus on Cinema. Ally continued to learn the art of cinema writing in the UCLA Writing Program and the Academy of Film Writing.
After a stroke in 2017, Ally was temporarily unable to write, so she decided to study other aspects of filmmaking, which led to her love of directing. Ally attended SF Film School, the Directing Actors Workshops and the Sundance Directing Program.
