SYNOPSIS:

Based on historic events, the script for “Cellblock Blue” is 114 pages.

It is August, 1944. Laura Gayle Tilson, 22, has just buried her parents after they were killed when their brakes failed and they crashed into a moving freight train.

She now has full ownership of the family business, Tilson Toy Import Company, which she knows has been sought after for years by corrupt Georgia State Senator Jacob Bevels to use for importing drugs.

After her company Christmas party, a drunken Bevels knocks her out, rapes her and cuts the brake lines on her car.

Laura Gayle awakens at dawn, realizes she has been raped by Bevels, gets her Colt .45 and gets into her car to go kill him. Her car crashes when her brakes fail.

Laura Gayle comes out from a coma in the hospital two days later. The city police chief, a Bevels lackey, charges her with trafficking in cocaine after five pounds of it was planted the toy warehouse.

She is sent to a South Georgia women's prison run by corrupt Warden Jonas Elijah Cutler. Over several months, realizing it could be her ticket to freedom, she documents in a journal numerous incidents of theft of state material and equipment, and that Cutler is running a prostitution ring out of a secret building painted blue inside the drug-addicted inmates there have dubbed Cellblock Blue.

Risking her life, she chloroforms the night guard, quietly enters Cellblock Blue and is amazed to see the cells are actually comfortable, well-appointed small bedrooms. It's a luxury the warden provides to the kept women who are sold out as prostitutes to wealthy men at local hunting lodges.

Only one inmate is there that night. Holding her new baby, she tells an incredulous Laura Gayle of the horrors and hopelessness the women endure in Cellblock Blue

Suddenly, the warden and two guards barge in. Laura Gayle dives into a laundry cart and buries herself in dirty linen, fearing pending death. He orders the guards to take out the comatose night guard, thinking she's passed out drunk, and they leave.

Laura Gayle, heart pounding, peeks out from under the dirty linens, climbs quietly out and races out of the building.

She learns Georgia State Senator Steven Redding will be visiting the prison on a fact-finding tour. She tapes her journal in the back of a cookbook with recipes developed by the inmates. During chow with the senator and his aide, the warden proudly gives the cookbook to Redding.

After reading of the corruption, Redding orders an investigation and has Laura Gayle transferred to a halfway house for her safety.

Cutler learns of the investigation and plants a bomb under Redding's car, but before the blast, Redding steps out and is only injured.

Mafioso John Diabrizzi, whose life Redding saved in World War II, reads about the attempted assassination in the New York Times. He and his brother Dominic fly to Georgia, surprise the warden at his house at night and hang him.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirms Bevels is a major drug trafficker, raped and tried to kill Laura Gayle, but before his arrest, he flees.

A month later, when Laura Gayle is asleep in her apartment above the warehouse, Bevels splashes gasoline all over the warehouse shop floor and sets it ablaze. Laura Gayle narrowly escapes from the burning building, which is destroyed.

Laura Gayle moves into a guest house owned by her attorney, Irishman Liam Patrick. They become interested in one another.

Laura Gayle learns where Bevels is hiding out and sets a trap for him. When he takes the bait and comes to the guest house to kill her, she shoots him seven times with her Colt .45.

Liam and Laura Gayle drag the body into the Savannah River. "This never happened," Liam declares.

With a "loan" from the Diabrizzi mafia family, Laura Gayle rebuilds her toy empire.

In the final scene, over credits, Redding, now Georgia governor, Laura Gayle and Liam cut the ceremonial ribbon at the grand opening of the Nils and Agatha Tilson Memorial Medical Center, owned by Laura Gayle, which was once the notorious women’s prison where so many suffered.
