HOT TAKES
By Joshua Clover

GENRE: Comedy
LOGLINE:

During a tense radio interview, the owner of one of the NFL’s worst franchises snaps and makes the ultimate on-air bet to two hot-shot hosts: run the team for a year—fail to make the playoffs, and they must resign from sports broadcasting forever; succeed, and they earn control plus a share of the profits. Suddenly, criticism isn’t just talk—it’s put up or shut up.

SYNOPSIS:

After decades of mediocrity, NFL team owner Thomas Blackwell has had enough of the local sports radio duo roasting his franchise. During a heated live interview, the hosts boast they could run the team better “blindfolded.” Blackwell calls their bluff: for one season, they will have full operational control — from player contracts to coaching hires — with one non-negotiable condition: make the playoffs, or resign from sportscasting forever.

Trent Caldwell, the analytics-obsessed strategist, and Mike “Mick” Donovan, the emotional old-school loudmouth, eagerly accept. But the reality of running a professional football team hits fast: cap space is real, agents are ruthless, and players have egos bigger than their stadium. Mistakes pile up, from overpaying free agents to alienating veteran leaders, and the team starts the season poorly.

As the hosts fumble through disastrous decisions, they slowly learn to rely on the wisdom of coaches, veterans, and even unexpected staff. Each week is a mix of chaos, comedy, and surprising insight, as the once hopeless team begins to click — just enough to make a playoff push possible.

In the final game of the regular season, the team’s postseason hopes hang by a thread. The hosts must decide whether to trust their instincts, rely on the people around them, or crumble under the weight of their own hubris. Will they prove they’re more than hot-take radio personalities, or will a lifetime of loud opinions end in career oblivion?
