But this is no simulation. The model requires constant upkeep, and every action taken within it sends ripples into the real world.

Passed down for millennia, the model was given to mankind as both a lesson and a punishment for its arrogance—a burden of stewardship demanding restraint, wisdom, and sacrifice. As the boy struggles to comprehend the scale of what he’s been shown, the old man reveals a harder truth: he is dying. The model cannot be left unattended—its balance must be constantly maintained—and with time running out, he has no choice but to prepare a successor.
