Synopsis:
In the wake of a rare and violent electrical storm, a young boy notices strange, colorful lights flickering from the basement of a recently arrived old man. Curious—and drawn to the man’s quiet kindness and intelligence—he slowly befriends him.
In time, the old man reveals an extraordinary secret. Hidden beneath the house is a locked wooden box that, when opened, expands into a vast, room-sized model of the Earth itself—alive with shifting cities, weather, and human activity. But this is no simulation. The model requires constant upkeep, and every action taken within it sends ripples into the real world.
Passed down for millennia, the model was given to mankind as both a lesson and a punishment for its arrogance—a burden of stewardship demanding restraint, wisdom, and sacrifice. As the boy struggles to comprehend the scale of what he’s been shown, the old man reveals a harder truth: he is dying. The model cannot be left unattended—its balance must be constantly maintained—and with time running out, he has no choice but to prepare a successor. Against all reason, he chooses the boy, making him the youngest Model Maker in history.
But the burden comes with danger. The old man was not always alone. Once, he trained an apprentice—someone he believed would one day take his place. That belief was shattered after a devastating flood claimed the life of someone the apprentice loved. Convinced the tragedy could have been prevented, the apprentice demanded intervention. The old man refused, bound by the knowledge that even the smallest change can unleash unintended and catastrophic consequences.
Unable to accept that restraint, the apprentice attempted to seize the model by force. The old man barely escaped, abandoning everything to keep it hidden. Now, with his strength fading and key tools missing from the model, he knows it is only a matter of time before the apprentice finds them again.
As the boy begins to learn the model’s rules—its precision, its dangers, and its impossible moral weight—he must prepare to take on a responsibility far beyond his years. For somewhere out there, a man who believes the world must be fixed at any cost is closing in… and the next set of changes may not be reversible.
