By Michael J. Hitchcock

GENRE: Comedy
LOGLINE: Business owner Andrew Smiggins fights city hall by running for mayor and learns he cannot hide his raunchy past of threesomes, drugs, and a lust for hardcore porn. After throwing in the towel, he discovers the people of Louisville closely connect with his checkered past, half-wit campaign staff, and the promise of free coffee for all.

SYNOPSIS:

Smiggins the Independent is a full-length feature comedy that follows a frustrated, unpolished business owner’s laughable run for mayor of Louisville. Engaging the help of several eccentric employees, Andrew Smiggins hires a driven, sexy campaign manager named Susan who guides the team through their rocky, hilarious mayoral crusade. With no special effects or stunts, Smiggins the Independent can be easily produced on a tight budget. Andrew’s home-hospice company is permanently teetering on the edge of failure due to Mayor Bernard’s constant barrage of new corporate taxes and medical regulations. During an evening of beer and slutty waitresses, best buddies Gary and Percy convince him to throw his hat in the ring for city mayor. Hesitant at first, Andrew is spurred to action over concern for his favorite patient, Louise; a 100-year-old sweetheart who flirts with him through her oxygen mask while watching interracial porn on a new plasma television. When a public debate reveals Andrew’s bawdy history of drugs, threesomes, and a passion for hardcore porn, he openly admits to vulgarities that throw the press and Bernard into a joyful frenzy. Andrew subsequently withdraws from the race, losing Susan in the process. Days later, while nursing his wounds with beer and friends, he discovers that the people of Louisville connected with his imperfect personality and rebellious nature. Reinvigorated, Andrew, Susan, and his entire staff reassemble with an innovative campaign slogan that embodies their new strategy of full disclosure; “Andrew Smiggins: Yeah, he probably did that too.” Littered with crude yet witty dialog, Smiggins the Independent exposes the reality of human nature, local politics, and a dysfunctional American society. With a comic approach, Smiggins is a character-driven piece that pokes fun at the thin veil of civility blanketing our society and the political arena.
