SYNOPSIS:
Make Room follows three lifelong best friends spending their final summer before high school in a trailer park where they have grown up together. Avery, Britt, and Kara have always known everything about one another, but over the course of the summer, their lives begin pulling them in different directions.
Avery leaves for a two-week college program and discovers a world of academic opportunity she had never imagined for herself. Britt remains at home, quietly balancing friendship with the increasing responsibility of caring for her younger sister while her mother struggles to function. Kara, meanwhile, falls into an exciting new social circle with an older boy, Cody, and begins tying her sense of security to the feeling of being wanted.
When Avery returns, the girls quickly fall back into their old rhythms, but the differences between them are harder to ignore. Avery becomes excited about future programs and opportunities beyond their neighborhood. Britt tries to carve out something of her own by joining marching band. Kara grows increasingly afraid that Avery is leaving her behind, while her relationship with Cody gives her a temporary sense of belonging.
Their friendship finally fractures after Kara impulsively kisses Avery’s longtime crush and asks Britt to keep it secret. Britt becomes trapped between them until the pressure of mediating their fight collides with the responsibilities waiting for her at home. Forced to stop using Britt as the bridge between them, Avery and Kara confront each other directly, unleashing resentments that go far deeper than the kiss. Kara accuses Avery of failing to understand how different their lives have always been, while Avery lashes out at Kara for letting her need to feel wanted dictate her future.
In the aftermath, Kara realizes that Cody never saw their relationship as seriously as she did, while Avery begins to understand that opportunity is not equally available to everyone. Britt, after spending the summer caring for everyone around her, finally receives a small act of care when her mother helps her pursue marching band.
On the first morning of high school, the girls board the bus carrying everything the summer has changed between them. Their problems are not magically solved, but the choice is clear: growing up may change the shape of their friendship, but they are still willing to make room for one another.
