As Confederate cavalry pursues Union troops across wartime Alabama, an enslaved man and an eleven-year-old girl brave a dangerous mission to bring home a wagonload of salt their community desperately needs.
SYNOPSIS:
In the spring of 1863, Colonel Abel Streight leads a daring Union raid deep into Alabama with one objective—to destroy the Confederate industrial center at Rome, Georgia. Pursuing him is Nathan Bedford Forrest, whose relentless cavalry chase becomes one of the most remarkable campaigns of the Civil War.
Far from the armies, Cherokee County widow Mertis McDaniel faces a quieter crisis. Wartime shortages have made salt nearly impossible to obtain, threatening her community's survival. When word arrives that salt is available in Rome, she entrusts the community's pooled money and wagon to Jep McDaniel, an enslaved man she has trusted since childhood. Her greatest act of faith, however, is sending her eleven-year-old daughter, Katie, with him.
As Jep and Katie journey across a countryside filling with soldiers, they encounter suspicious strangers, flooded creeks, and the growing chaos of war. Along the way, small moments of humor, courage, and quiet humanity forge an unforgettable bond between them while history unfolds around them.
Inspired by the remarkable true events of Streight's Raid, Ride to Rome tells the story of ordinary people whose courage was measured not by glory on the battlefield, but by the simple determination to bring hope home.
