About Carel

Born into a diplomatic family, Carel considers himself a global citizen and an agent provocateur who'll admit to being a jack-of-all-trades and master of some. In truth, he’s a published author who wrote his first novel at the age of eight and still has the 400-word manuscript to prove it. He’s a songsmith who insists on tittling i’s, tattling t’s and exalting alternative viewpoints. He’s also been a speech-, documentary-, script- and copywriter, a creative researcher, a sound-engineer, a band-frontman, a news editor, a programme manager at a radio station and an award-winning broadcaster. Currently, he's a sought-after text editor and content generator serving as creative consultant and advertising campaign conceptualiser for agencies both in Cape Town and Johannesburg. He loves rhyme, rhythm, reading, story-telling, as well as vocal production and voice-artistry in general. He also takes pride in being totally anal about spelling, grammar and punctuation. He has an affinity for the underdog, prefers taking on insurmountable challenges and listening to Beethoven, Trent Reznor, or Rammstein while doing so. In his spare time, he collects fountain pens, and studio microphones.

Last, but hardly least, Carel loves being musical maestro Cornell Boshoff's partner in Spiral Staircase Music, trading as The Carnell Collective. Cornell is a veritable compositional and technological wizard who has an arsenal of whizzbang hardware and software instruments at his disposal. Their partnership is much more than a compound noun, it’s a creative crucible, a melting pot of energy and ideas. It’s fired by a commitment to excellence and a wealth of experience in the entertainment industry. It has welded their complementary talents together over decades and truly represents their professional lives as a verb.

"In a trade known for its obsession with the mundane, we're innovatively original. We are who we say we are and we can do what we say we can. No smoke and mirrors here," he says.
