About Larry

Larry Butchins; Author, Content Developer, Actor
I was born in Cape Town, South Africa, and started my journalistic career as a cub reporter on Durban’s morning newspaper, the Natal Mercury, covering fires, accidents, shipping and beach news. I then moved to the Sunday Tribune's Johannesburg branch office, covering everything from visiting celebrities to political scandals and student riots.
Eventually lured into Public Relations, I worked for one of South Africa’s leading PR agencies before moving back to Durban to open my own PR firm.
On moving to Israel with my family in 1987, I branched from classical PR into Marketing Communication, running a small English-language agency promoting Israeli products abroad. I have worked with Israeli High-Tech enterprises for many years.
In addition to professional writing, I write articles and stories, two travel blogs, The Offbeat Traveler and Travelers Secrets, and children’s books, two of which have been published; one in the US and the other in South Africa. I developed, designed and wrote a web site about my wife Marlyn's quilt project arising from the Dizengoff suicide bombing, and "Marlyn's Quilting Site" showcasing her many quilting projects. I am also a professional actor and voice-over artist and a founder of the Guild Theater Company of Ra’anana (Israel).
Regarding the art of writing, I like screen writer and dramatist Gene Fowler's description: "Writing is easy. All you do is stare at a blank sheet of paper until drops of blood form on your forehead."
Marlyn and I live in Kfar Saba north of Tel Aviv, have three grown children and one grandson...and three cats.
