Vincent Specter, the black sheep of a legendary family of private investigators, struggles to live up to his legacy—until he inherits four ghosts that help him become a "Guardian of Goodwill"
SYNOPSIS:
The story begins in a dark alley, where private investigator Vincent Specter wakes up in his beat-up Honda Civic after being disturbed by a homeless man rummaging through trash cans. When Vincent notices wealthy Sam Spital disposing of garbage, he suspects something and retrieves a crucial item from the trash, narrowly avoiding a knife-wielding confrontation with the homeless man. That item—a condom—later becomes evidence for his anxious client Natalie, who is trying to prove that Spital is her father. After delivering the sample, Vincent learns of his estranged Uncle Charlie’s death and is presented with a family scroll, only to discover that his uncle’s fortune was donated to charity. Disheartened, he drowns his sorrows at a bar run by his friend Emily, but his life takes a stranger turn when four ghosts appear, telling him he is destined to become the next “guardian of goodwill.”
Vincent’s first true test comes when a young woman named Shannon Fray hires him to find her rapist, a crime the police dismissed due to lack of evidence. As Vincent and the ghosts investigate, they uncover eerie connections between Shannon’s attack and a sinister hypnotist show called Evol Sixes, run by Simon Kidd and his brother Marlon. The group discovers that Shannon’s trauma, as well as an old woman’s hypnotized killing spree, are tied to subliminal triggers involving lullaby music and the phrase “SEX IS LOVE.” While Vincent initially suspects Simon, clues point toward deeper manipulation. Meanwhile, Sam Spital resurfaces, hiring Vincent to recover semen evidence tied to Natalie, further entangling him in morally complex cases.
As the mystery deepens, Emily becomes targeted after attending the hypnotist’s show against Vincent’s wishes, and she is eventually kidnapped. Vincent, aided by the ghosts, uncovers that Marlon—not Simon—is the true villain, orchestrating rapes and murders while hiding behind his brother’s stage persona. In a tense cemetery showdown, Marlon attempts to use Emily under hypnosis to kill Vincent, but Jesse, one of the ghosts, possesses her to resist. Vincent ultimately disarms Marlon, who confesses his crimes before being arrested. With Emily safe and Shannon finally given justice, Vincent embraces his role as the “guardian of goodwill,” vowing to dedicate himself to helping only those truly in need, fulfilling his family’s strange and haunting legacy.
