SERMON ON THE WARD -- STAGE PLAY
By Matthew St. Amand

GENRE: Comedy
LOGLINE: The historical figure, Jesus Christ, is a resident in a modern day psychiatric ward.

SYNOPSIS:

Set in a psychiatric ward the day administrator Dr. Loaf hands responsibility over to his replacement, Dr. Fairissey. As Dr. Loaf gives a rundown of the patients with the most pressing cases, he informs Dr. Fairissey that there is one patient who is particularly unique: Jesus Christ—the actual, historical figure, Jesus Christ. Dr. Fairissey is incredulous, but soon finds that patients and staff, alike, are quite blasé, but unshakable, in their acceptance that Jesus Christ dwells among them. The Orderly chides Jesus for turning the water cooler water into wine. Nurse Bethany complains to Jesus about her unfair supervisor. His fellow patients make no demands of Jesus, other than one asking if she might have bigger boobs. Jesus Christ was brought to the ward after he was found amid a minor food riot at the local market, where bakers’ bread suddenly burst through shop windows and fish suddenly burst fingermongers’ baskets. In the midst of the panic and looting, police found Jesus standing nearby bleeding from his wrists, forehead and side. Believing these to be self-inflicted wounds, he was taken to the hospital. Dr. Fairissey, however, is having none of it. He’s unhappy that patients are reinforcing this man’s messianic delusions, and is quite appalled that staff is doing the same thing. Soon, Dr. Fairissey’s professional pride is on the line and he takes it upon himself to “cure” Jesus Christ. When Jesus Christ is found in the room of a patient who had recently harmed herself, Dr. Fairissey decides to put him on trial before staff and other patients, with the hope that Jesus Christ will finally speak and reveal himself as a faker and a fraud. Dr. Fairissey soon learns the true meaning of the saying, “Careful what you wish for.”
