I was only 32 years old in this play, the Irish tragedy, "Riders to the Sea." I was made up to look over 70 years old and, when mingling with the audience after the show, nobody knew who I was! I was even told "Americans can't perform a proper Irish dialect like the leading lady we saw tonight." Had to have my director tell them it was actually me!
Long ago, the day I had just 30 minutes to impress our Speech coach enough to let me on the team. I would be the only Sophomore student ever on his speech team and brought home all first place awards that year. In 2013, after the League compiled and added up all of my competition winning points, I was given the World Record for the highest number of competition points earned since the National Speech Drama and Forensics League started in 1921.
