About Paul

After 31 years of policing the streets of one of the most diverse cites in the UK, during which time I raised a family (actually two families), I decided that the time was right to retire and offer a consultancy in policing to current and budding authors, screenwriters, news/media organisations and film/tv companies, as well as beginning to write about the rich library of stories and experiences I had stored away over the years.

Being a full time 'uniform wearer' I was usually the first to see life in the raw on many many occasions. From managing rain soaked crime scenes, to hot sweaty summer nights in civil disturbances, from fighting with house burglars in a dark back alley or helping put up the Christmas lights for a lonely old age pensioner I have pretty much seen the entire spectrum of the good and the bad.

Triumph and tragedy, tears and laughter, the mundane to the terrifying, the inspiring to the frustrating. Fast cars to pedal cycles! Throw in the absurdities, peculiar directives, and frustrations that invariably rise from the 'I know best' breed of manager, purveyors of government officialdom, and the to and fro of the criminal justice system, and I received an exceptional education in the best and worst of humanity along with all its functioning, or malfunctioning organs!

Trained at great expense, I was one of the first group of UK police officers to be on permanent and dedicated firearms patrol in the new Armed Response Units. As a First Responder for CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear) incidents, I trained with the military for the day the unimaginable happened. An experienced 'first at scene' crime scene manager I covered everything from murder/serious assault, to rape, serious traffic accidents, and child abuse. That's not to say I had forgotten the lighter side of policing and the value of a police officer on a pedal cycle patrolling a leafy community during my early years!

During my last 10 years service I was promoted to Patrol Sergeant, and working out of a police station that reminded me of the ineractions and lifestyles of those who used to inhabit the classic 'Hill Street Blues' tv series, I had the privilege of leading my own team of Response officers. During times of change in the way policing is accepted and perceived by communities, I like to think that I passed on some of the tried and tested 'old ways' that got the job done, quietly and efficiently!

Currently I am an 'on air' commentator covering policing issues for my local BBC tv/radio station. I have also contributed to national BBC Radio 4's 'File on Four' programme regarding police corruption.

BBC 'Timewatch' - (edition) 'Roman Soldiers To Be' Paul was one of a group of 'civilians' taken back to 200AD Roman Britain, and inducted into a Roman Legion as a recruit. Part documentary/historical reconstruction it involved the recruits living, eating and training exactly as experienced by ancient recruits. An enlightening and fascinating documentary that was well received by both media and the public upon broadcast.
