When her astronaut mom is stranded on the Moon with only days to live, a courageous 16-year old and three classmates embark on a hazardous journey to rescue her.
SYNOPSIS:
Kiara Roberts is no typical prep school junior. She flies helicopters with astronaut dad, Terry, and explores lava tubes with her hydrologist mom, Diana. But not next weekend - next weekend Diana is exploring a lava tube on the Moon! Like Kiara, Terry fears for Diana’s life. He suspects Olympic Aerospace, the company which built the huge Perseus rocket, compromised on safety. Kiara’s classmate, Nathan Black has his own fears - an undetected debris shower. Kiara and friends, Mana and Alberto, think Nathan is nuts. So do Olympic Aerospace owner, Sir Reginald Swift and his daughter, Alexa, one of the four Perseus astronauts. Despite the fears, Perseus lands on the Moon; but as Diana explores her lava tube, an asteroid debris shower disables Perseus. NASA’s only option is to keep resupplying the astronauts until a lunar lander can be sent - but the first rocket can’t launch until after the frigid lunar night arrives. Nathan says he can rescue the astronauts with the untested spacecraft his late aerospace parents built. Named BUTTERFLY, its anti-gravity generator (AGG) lowers the ship’s mass to zero requiring less thrust and fuel. But Nathan can’t work the AGG’s anti-torque pedals since he lost the use of his legs in the car accident which killed his parents.
Kiara agrees to operate the AGG, but Nathan’s grandmother, Nova, herself an aerospace engineer, wants Terry to test fly Butterfly first pushing the rescue launch into the lunar night. With no other option, Kiara, Nathan, Mana and Alberto hijack Butterfly. As they head for the Moon, NASA learns that Alexa is seriously injured. After the teens land, Mana, a pre-med student, diagnoses Alexa’s injury as a shrapnel wound. A doctor on GATEWAY, the small lunar orbiting space station, confirms Mana’s diagnosis, says he must return with Alexa immediately or she’ll die. Since Gateway’s return capsule only holds four astronauts Kiara and Nathan offer Diana a seat on Butterfly. On the journey home, a huge solar storm puts Butterfly into a spin. Moments later a fire explodes out the communication panel. While fighting the fire, Diana is knocked unconscious. Later, while Nathan and Alberto repair the damage, Mana examines Diana and finds out she’s also pregnant. Nathan then discovers a problem with the AGG which could jeopardize reentry. As predicted, the AGG fails and Butterfly descends at 100 percent mass. With no wheels to land like the Space Shuttle, Kiara must rely on her skill as a student helicopter pilot to land the crippled spacecraft.
