BETWEEN TWO EVILS
By Robin Juliet

GENRE: Drama
LOGLINE:

Not knowing if she's a rock star's illegitimate child or not, a woman (Nina) must deal with family secrets before her eccentric ex-groupie mother corrupts Nina's sixteen year old daughter.

SYNOPSIS:

Between Two Evils flips back and forth between a sleazy motel room romp set in the 1970's and a contemporary family driving to a sweet sixteen birthday party for their daughter (Cece). The two worlds collide as Cece makes reference to her Grandma being the girl in Lynyrd Skynyrd's “What's Your Name.”

The conflict between Cece's mother (Nina) and grandmother (Maeve) stems from how to raise teenage daughters in a sexually charged world. Is it best to shelter young girls or expose them to reality? Maeve sees no problem with giving Cece a glimpse into her rock star groupie past, but Nina's not comfortable with that.

We see Maeve being a hit at the party with her “Most Interesting Man in the World” boyfriend and sex talk. Cece mirrors her grandmother with her own, sage teenage advice. Iggy, the surly younger brother, brings the party to a screeching halt by getting drunk.

When Nina confronts Maeve the next day, their fight highlights how Nina doesn't know anything about her father. Nina seeks consolation from her adoring husband (Dennis). What Dennis doesn't get a chance to tell Nina is that Maeve's story about being the rock star's muse is a lie. It says so on Wikipedia.

Once Maeve realizes she's been exposed, she agrees to tell Nina about her father. The story takes us back to Route 66 in the mid-70's. The young, bored Maeve narrowly escapes a world of misery in the barren desert. Life on the road suits teen Maeve—but what she doesn't yet know is that she''s pregnant.

Kind truckers drop teen Maeve off at a hippie commune where Maeve meets Joey. This closeted young man explains to Maeve that half-truths help people live their lives while everyone can save face. Maeve takes this advice to heart and lives as Joey's makeshift beard while she's pregnant up until Nina is a young child.

When Nina learns about her past, it starts to make sense how her mother came to be the woman she is today. Would that really be so bad for her own daughter Cece? In the end we find out that Maeve and Cece also had an early morning talk where Maeve urged Cece to go for her gold—whatever that may end up being.

Nina, we learn through flashbacks, is Maeve's gold. The rock star story was merely that. A story. The movie ends with Nina in the desert tracking down her long lost father.
