IMAGINE...
By Robert Beedham

GENRE: Mystery
LOGLINE:

When his father is murdered, a teenager is desperate to discover the truth about his mysterious past and his own identity. He escapes The Island to search for clues in New York and hunted by assassins, discovers the incredible truth: The Island is a secret dystopian paradise for stars escaping the price of fame, their deaths faked, his father…John Lennon.

SYNOPSIS:

Cool, musical Johnny knows everything about pop-culture, but nothing about real life, the outside world or his beloved father Winston, an enigmatic man whose past he’s shrouded in mystery. When he’s attacked, Johnny retaliates expertly, but Winston dies. Deeply troubled and desperate to understand his father and his own identity, Johnny escapes The Island with Bohemian Marsha, who has her own secrets, to his father’s adopted city to search for clues.

They’re fish out of water, not understanding basics like money or why ‘Island’ music is here. Then the deadly Hunters attack, but his father’s contact The Salesman helps and takes them to his Club, Heroes, packed with pop memoribilia. He reveals that The Hunters won’t kill them because they’re Special Ones, but refuses to say why. Johnny realises this connects to his search for the truth about his father and vows to discover how.

On The Island, The Founder demands The Hunters bring the couple back. The Salesman takes pity on Johnny, giving him a database of Islanders, hoping he might recognise people, or their music and films, but he can’t. The Salesman then takes them to the Dakota Hotel and a home in Manhatten, hoping they mean something to Johnny, but they don’t. As The Salesman decides he’ll tell Johnny everything he knows, The Hunters kill him, leaving the young couple friendless and fearful in New York, pursued by the determined assassins.

Johnny searches the database and finds his father’s name Winston, but no more information. Then, searching The Salesman’s home, he finds the address of a vault, discovering reviews of his father as a world famous musician. Amazed, Johnny realises The Salesman recruited famous people for The Island, but why? Then The Founder sanctions Johnny’s murder in case he talks and The Hunters pounce, taunt him about all the famous people on The Island, mock about his father’s identity, then disappear. Even more tormented, Johnny’s determined to discover what assassins know and takes his last desperate step: he’ll lure The Hunters to him.

Heroes is packed when The Hunters arrive. They defeat Johnny then The Salesman appears alive, begging customers to protect Jimmy, the secret son of John Lennon. The crowd mock and the assassins prepare to kill Johnny when Lennon appears, also alive. He says the price of fame is Hell, but how d’you escape it? Live on The Island, among pop stars, actors, Presidents and Princesses. The crowd jeer, until Johnny plays piano, his father singing ‘Imagine.’ Now the crowd finally believe. But then Lennon humiliates them for believing such a ludicrous story! The mob turn violent and attack Johnny who escapes outside and confronts his father. The story is true. Celebrities, weary of crazed fans, stalkers, drugs, divorces, greed, flops, expectations and media frenzy escape to live in secret with their own kind. But, it’s dystopian, because unknown to them, a body-double dies in their place, a funeral faked. And if celebrities try to leave or escape, they disappear, sanctioned by The Founders. Johnny finally understands his father, and himself, but won’t go back. Proud of him, Lennon leaves. Marsha finally reveals her own secret: she always knew who her father is, but desperately wants to know more about him, so they leave for Seattle, hometown of her father Jimi Hendrix.
