LOGLINE:

A team of amputee veterans pursue a second chance at life through wheelchair basketball only to overcome tragedy and corruption on their way to the Paralympic Games.

SYNOPSIS:

Shots of veteran billboards and armed forces recruiting posters litter the streets of Los Angeles.

KIRK JENNINGS is an amputee Army war veteran who is dealing with the loss of his legs. Kirk is struggling to support his family as a set military expert and want to be able to support his family and overcome the shame he has brought on them by being an amputee.

Kirk gets laid off from his film job and needs an escape so he joins the wheelchair basketball team.

The coach, Coach James, informs the team that it is a disciplined environment and tells the team to shave all beards. The men shave their beards and commit to daily practice to compete in local wheelchair games.

Kirk and the team bond. The other team members are introduced and talk about their individual struggles and dreams that they want to achieve before they die. Kirk’s, wife is informed that most amputees have the risk of vascular disease which can be fatal. In addition, new reporters swarm the compound to ask the team questions about corruption allegations within the Wounded Warrior program.

The team wins the local wheelchair tournaments and is selected to go to the Wounded Warrior Olympics. The team members start to realize that there is a second chance at life. Kirk gets a new job as a military expert working on a television set.

Kirk is brimming with confidence at his new job and success with his new group of friends. All of a sudden, Kirk faints on set and is taken to the hospital. His wife is told that Kirk has vascular disease.

Kirk is notified that he is being laid off from his job due to his health and insurance concerns. One of the team members (Kirk’s mentor) dies of suicide. The team is shocked. The Wounded Warrior program states that this is the last wheelchair Olympics. The coach is found drunk and reveals that he lost his two sons in the war.

The team decides to bond and convince the coach to come back to the team—the coach comes back. The team plays in the Wounded Warrior Olympics and wins the tournament. However, a few weeks later, Kirk is rushed to the hospital and dies…in the hands of Coach James.

The ESPY awards honor Coach James for being coach of the year and Kirk James for being best amputee athlete of the year.
