The leader of a gated community must keep his people alive 75 years after a virus wipes out 75% of the world's population.
SYNOPSIS:
Roger Hunter is sitting in his living room watching the news, which is giving details about the flu vaccine. He shuts the tv off as Alena, his wife, walks in. They discuss the slowness of how Johnstown, the community they live in, is and how they yearn for more exciting things to happen. Meanwhile, a military convoy starts patrolling the streets, ordering everyone to head towards City Hall. Roger, Alena, and their neighbor Frank follow behind the trucks and arrive at City Hall. There, the commander of the military force discloses that Johnstown is now under strict quarantine until further notice. The convoy leaves, and Roger, being the mayor, decides the best course of action is to padlock the main gates shut and begin preparing the parks for farming.
75 years later, the anniversary of The Closing is beginning. Jeff Hunter, the recently appointed mayor and Roger's grandson, is informed that an aphid colony has gotten out of control and destroyed the hops that had been saved for the brewery. Jeff and his senior adviser Fred Faulk decide to send a scavenging party of six thieves outside the community to find more liquor.
The prisoners arrive at a town not too far from Johnstown, and after further investigation, discover that the town is deserted. While looking for the liquor store, they come across a clinic. After proceeding inside, one of the prisoners discovers a room full of decayed skeletons and bodies. The group then decides it is best to return to Johnstown, but on their way out, a man in a doctor's uniform stops them, holding a gun to their heads. He takes them to a room, where he plays Russian roulette with them, eventually killing one of them. Another prisoner then jumps up, taking the doctor to the ground while Dennis, the group leader, grabs the shotgun and kills the doctor. Dennis then sees that Kaylee, one of the prisoners, had been stabbed in the gut and was bleeding out. The remaining prisoners carry Kaylee and Justin, the dead prisoner, back to Johnstown.
Meanwhile, Jeff and Donna are sitting together at a feast outside city hall. Jeff reveals that he is unsure of what his grandfather would think of how he has managed the town. As him and Donna are discussing the issue, Fred approaches with a terrified look on his face. He tells Jeff to follow him immediately. As Jeff excuses himself, Fred rushes him to the infirmary where the group is standing around the wounded prisoner. Jeff asks Dennis what happened, and Dennis tells him about their ordeal. After they finish their discussion, the wounded prisoner goes into shock and dies. Jeff than decides to call an emergency meeting in the City Hall.
At the meeting, Jeff reveals what has transpired over the past day. He announces that the prisoners who died, Justin Loch and Kaylee Korner, will be buried the following day. He also announces that the festivities have been cancelled until further notice. There is then a vote in which the whole town must decide on whether or not they must end their period of isolation and work on actively finding out what has transpired over 75 years. The vote comes to pass with 52 to 48 percent in favor of unlocking the gate.
Later that night, Jeff is lying in his bed and falls asleep. During this time, he receives a dream in which his grandfather comes to him. Jeff approaches him and asks what is happening. Roger than tells him that he has made a mistake in unlocking the gates. He states that there is an even bigger threat that is coming that will spell the end of Johnstown. He begins to leave, but turns around to deliver a final warning. “Your world is about to explode into something that is beyond your control. Keep an eye out front and an eye on your back.” Afterwards, Roger disappears into a mist of fog. The episode ends with Jeff waking up from his dream with a terrified look on his face.
