After her best friend commits suicide, a headstrong young woman and a new acquaintance travel to dangerous territory to rescue her late friend’s child and girlfriend.
SYNOPSIS:
PELL ADAMS (40s) is aboard a train headed to San Antonio. Across from him sits a teenage passenger, DIMÁS. Dimás scribbles something in a newspaper. When the train stops, Dimás goes to the bathroom. Pell reads what Dimás has written and chases after him. But it’s too late. Dimás shoots himself in the lavatory.
At the train stop, Dimás’ best friend ADRIENNE WEST (23) waits for him, only to find the police carrying his body out on a gurney. Pell approaches Adrienne and tells her Dimás’ is dead. He says that Dimás’ suicide note asked her to help his sick girlfriend KARIME and their newborn son ELÍAS who are trapped in Mexico with her father, AGUSTÍN. Pell clearly wants to be of help to Adrienne and offers her his contact information.
Adrienne tries to find a way to help Karime, including asking BRODY, Dimás’ social worker, for assistance. We learn that Brody and Adrienne have been sleeping together despite Brody being married. Adrienne doesn’t have any luck finding a way to contact Karime or even getting to Mexico on her own. So, she reaches out to Pell, who agrees to take her.
However, Mexico is far more dangerous than Adrienne anticipated. She and Pell witness violence at a burger joint and later must pay off some armed men to continue down a certain road. After Brody finds out that Adrienne is in Mexico, he leaves his upset wife SANDIE to find her and bring her back.
Once in Oaxaca, Adrienne reveals to Pell that Agustín is a drug lord and has kidnapped Karime and her son. Angry, Pell says that they are heading back to the US first thing in the morning. Brody arrives in Oaxaca with the same idea in mind. The three of them head to dinner. While eating, they theoretically make a plan as to how they would save Karime. However, in the course of the night, Pell becomes convinced this is the right thing to do. He produces two guns and convinces Adrienne and Brody to get onboard.
Pell, Adrienne and Brody locate Agustín’s house. Pell and Adrienne look for Karime and Elías while Brody keeps watch. Adrienne sneaks into Karime’s room, but Karime is insistent that Adrienne takes only Elías; she’s too sick to escape. Pell and Adrienne take only the baby and head back to Brody. Once there, Adrienne is upset and convinces them that they need to go back to save Karime.
Pell goes back to rescue Karime on his own. Meanwhile, Agustín looks for Elías, and Karime tells him he’s gone. When Agustín is about to beat Karime, Pell emerges and pulls a gun on Agustín. However, Pell is knocked out. He awakes, tied up. Agustín tortures him, asking for his grandson. Pell doesn’t respond. Agustín takes a picture and knocks him out again. When he wakes up, he’s with Karime, who unties him. Pell and Karime break free and escape.
As the crew makes their way back to the States, they run into two armed HALCONES who destroy Pell’s car. When they try to take Karime back, Pell kills the men.
Pell, Adrienne, Brody and Karime, along with the baby, walk in the blistering desert to the border. However, Karime is too sick to go on. She asks Brody and his wife to adopt Elías. She dies shortly after.
Pell, Adrienne and Brody finally make it to the border and get on a train back to the States. While it seems like they are home free, Mexican police enter the train and take Pell away. Adrienne sits and watches, as she must pretend like she doesn’t know Pell in order to protect Elías. She’s in pure anguish.
Soon after, Adrienne is in a hospital back in the US, She peers in a room, watching Brody and his wife fawn over Elías—their new child. She leaves, knowing she must move on. We cut to later; Adrienne is in school now, and she wears a bracelet belonging to Pell.
