I've been writing since my second grade teacher, Sister Mary Earl of the Dominican Order, convinced me I wrote better than I drew. Never occurred to me when I was that young that anyone could actually write for a living. Who'd have ever thought, eh?
Recently a few people have asked what I write, so I gave it some thought, and here's what I write: Regardless of genre, I write from the heart. I write what tears me in two, what makes me laugh, makes me cringe, what makes me so angry I want to jump up and down and smash things to bits.
I write to heal. If I write it down--whatever IT is--I forget it. As a result, I don't write shopping lists or to-do lists, or I will forget what it is I'm supposed to remember.
What I like most about writing are first drafts. When I am writing a first draft, I'm somewhere else entirely. Nothing exists but the words I'm putting on paper, metaphorically on paper that is. I actually write on the computer. A Mac. Since 1986.
