About Larry

BIOGRAPHY - LARRY HANKIN

Larry Hankin is a writer, performer, director, producer and Oscar-nominee - and one of Hollywood's most recognizable faces in the world of character actors. He started out as a stand-up comic opening for Woody Allen back-in-the-day; a graduate of "Second City", and original member of "The Committee" (a San Francisco improve group), Larry has gone on to play roles in such diverse projects as "Laverne and Shirley"; Charlie Butz in "Escape From Alcatraz": the convict Clint Eastwood left behind, and "Old Joe",The owner of the huge junkyard in the desert in "Breaking Bad"; and recently in Bill Hader's new Series "Barry".

Larry's been seen in over 185 TV shows and movies: he stole the raisins on "Seinfeld"; he was Mr. Heckles, the downstairs neighbor on "Friends"; on "Breaking Bad", Larry supplied the huge electro-magnet, on Barry, the hit man.

BUT COMEDIC STORYTELLING IS WHERE HIS HEART'S LIES. All along, Larry's also been writing short, satiric fables which he's been turning into film shorts, His first: "SOLLY'S DINER" (1980) which he wrote, produced, directed and played the lead, was nominated for an Academy Award.

In 2013, Larry wrote, produced and played the lead in a series of 3 episodic comedy outlaw biker film shorts: "THE OUTLAW EMMETT DEEMUS", which were shown in festivals around the world. It was popular enough to get Larry to write a feature screenplay for the character, called: "How To Become an Outlaw": script available on request. Or: check it out on Vimeo.

THE OUTLAW EMMETT DEEMUS is kind-of-sort-of Don Quixote on a motorcycle: a heroically inclined, odd, elderly biker on a battered old motorcycle with a sidecar determined to become an Heroic Bounty-Hunter-of-Fame-and-Fortune, with all the frailties of age and humanity (and unintended consequences either way) that go with it, while also trying to follow his kidnapped almost perfect Perfect Doreen.

*
Larry has also recently completed an hour pilot for a half-hour or hour cable comedy TV series for himself: "EMMETT IN PEOPLELAND" plus a 2:30 second trailer for a half-hour episode that's completely different than the episode in his hour teleplay:

In this narrative Emmett is a quixotic, homeless window-washer living on the beach in Venice, California who moonlights as a wanna-be "great detective" for the neighborhood (rich, poor, tourist, sometimes whether you wanted his services or not. He's "Colombo" or "Monk" plus Sanford & Sons, but in more-or-less Chaplin narratives (defeat The Bad Guys, Solve The Crime, get the lady or the tiger or the reward or some of the above or none; everybody is better off at the end and Emmett remains homeless but better for the adventure and ready to do it again next week. Emmett is a total McGyver survivor.
