STOOL PIGEONS

STOOL PIGEONS
By Bruno Derlin

GENRE: Thriller, Crime
LOGLINE:

In a secluded and seedy motel in the middle of nowhere, a young woman suffering from autoimmune disorders, is held captive for a ransom package that isn’t coming, while one of her captors falls head over heels for her.

SYNOPSIS:

A modern luxury sedan pulls into the empty parking lot of The White Dove, a seedy motel located off of a secluded interstate that trails off into darkness. The vehicle’s driver, BILLY BOLTON (mid-30s), slides out of the car, carrying what appears to be a bag of groceries. He’s elegantly clad and sports a fedora hat that could easily imply he might be a time traveler that has stumbled several decades into his own future.

On his way into the motel, he stops to greet GRADY, an eccentric handyman who is scrubbing crusted bird poop off the vent grids of a large air conditioning unit that sits in the corner of the establishment’s rear parking lot. The short and eerie verbal exchange reveals that Billy has a soft spot for animals, refusing Grady’s invitation to partake in a bizarre game that involves the brutal torture of live, captured pigeons. Following a strange and ominous moment of foreshadowing, which involves Grady’s nose suddenly bleeding without any obvious trauma, Billy walks off to tend to his “business” at hand.

Billy enters the motel and CHARLIE PLATT, the motel’s owner/manager, doesn’t notice Billy at first as he is immersed in reading a hardcover book dealing with M-Theory and Parallel Dimensions, as its title suggests. Their quick exchange involves a monetary transaction, which covers for “another” full week’s stay, a very odd agreement, considering that a crudely handwritten sign just outside the motel entrance clearly states that the only available lodging options at this motel are for “short stay” guests.

Billy then heads off to Room 22, which is guarded by an unnamed GOON. Upon entering the room, Billy is almost hit in the face by the “flying” Bible that SYLVIE DREY (early 30s) has just flung across the room as a form of rebellion for her boredom and anger surrounding her current situation. She is the captive victim of a complicated kidnapping scheme that involves her elusive, absent father, a very wealthy gangster. The constant muffled cooing of unseen pigeons and a bouncing string hanging from the air conditioning vents give credence to Sylvie’s constant complaints regarding the air quality in the room, which can’t be too pure if originating from the same bird poop covered AC unit that Grady was scrubbing in the rear lot.

Sylvie’s demeanor toward Billy suggests that she is well aware of his romantic interest in her regard and she belittles him verbally for never going for what he truly wants. Their little quarrel is quickly interrupted by the arrival of CARL, another tough guy gangster type. He’s clearly not as fond of Sylvie and is especially irritated by her complaints. Carl demands for Billy to follow him elsewhere to discuss the evolving ransom situation, and as they leave the room, Billy gives Sylvie an apologetic glance, but her teary eyes inform him of just how disappointed she is.

In a quiet lounge area, Billy suggests to Carl that due to Sylvie’s current deteriorating health, he is seriously considering summoning a doctor for her, but Carl shoots the idea down with adamant conviction, as such move would ensure their certain demise at the hands of their notoriously violent boss, a powerful crime lord simply referred to as “G”.

Revealing what Carl already suspected, Billy tells him that he’s in love with Sylvie and has a perfect plan of escape that would even outsmart the maniacal G, who is said to have powerful connections all over town. Carl, who regards Billy as a very close friend, agrees to listen to and consider Billy’s plan, which is never actually discussed during the impromptu meeting.

The two kidnappers, armed with their respective, concealed weapons and a perfect plan, go to see Charlie, offering him a brand new payment plan, designed to cover for motel expenses, above and beyond the owner’s expectations. They proceed to summon Sylvie and execute the more delicate portion of their plan, but upon entering their captive’s room, a very shocking and unforeseen situation forces them to revise the plan, paving the way for a twist of events that is sure to shed doubt on everything that has happened thus far, and suggesting that perhaps, Charlie’s M-Theory book referencing parallel dimensions was a lot more than just an incidental prop.
