A late 30's professional woman, who identifies as a non-offending pedophile (virtuous pedophile) fights a legal case for the right to die, after an incident where a young boy accidentally enters her cubicle at her local swimming pool, causing her to fear she may now act upon her urges.
SYNOPSIS:
I really wanted to master the art of writing character study pieces, so a while back I posed myself the question, who or what is the most complex character I can think of?
I let this fester for several months before coming across an article about non-offending pedophiles or virtuous pedophiles as they are sometimes referred to. While this may seem like a controversial and taboo subject, I was left astounded by the community of individuals who have intrusive urges but that never act upon them. What kind of life do they have? What is their social life like? Who do they confide in? Do people believe them? What if they say they are virtuous as a cover?
I then read about the case of a Belgian man who wanted to be euthanized because he was a convicted pedophile, who was about to be released back into society, but knew that he was going to act upon his urges again. I thought this was equally as fascinating and decided to link the two aspects together to create a character who has always considered themselves to be virtuous until an incident (a young boy accidentally running into their changing stall at the local swimming pool) tips them over the edge. Suddenly they feel that they might act upon it.
The story revolves about them fighting for the right to die so that they never bring harm to a child. I thought to give it even more of a complexity, what if the offender in question was actually female, which is much rarer in pedophilia. The subject is controversial, the character complex and story ground fertile.
