CHARMING

CHARMING
By Martin Fisher

GENRE: Comedy
LOGLINE:

On the day after happily ever after, a PRINCE wakes up to a loveless marriage, his monarchy in crisis, and the impossible task of having to save the kingdom from his EVIL STEP-MOTHER-IN-LAW.

SYNOPSIS:

It was love at first sight... until they saw each other for the first time.

She crashed his party, uninvited. They danced; but not long enough for him to catch her name. She runs off, leaving behind a GLASS SLIPPER. The next day foot and slipper are reunited. Twenty-four hours after that, they’re married. And we’re suppose to believe they lived happily ever after... Really?

A PEASANT BECOMES A PRINCESS

(Think Cinderella becomes Princess Diana.)

PRINCE CHARMING, for all his perfections, shares few dimensions of compatibility with CINDERELLA. He wakes to a menagerie of her most intimate friends—BIRDS, MICE, DOGS—all of whom aggravate his severe allergies. His eyes are bleeding. But that is not what irritates his sinuses: he wakes up MARRIED. Somebody “charmed” the punch.

His mother the QUEEN is desperate. Should Prince fail to sire a male heir the Charming Dynasty will cease, and his ambiguously human stepbrother, MARQUIS MAURICE, will be appointed king. Darkness and despair would soon befall the kingdom.

But one must love to feel love, and Prince does not. He refuses to play baby roulette—fifty-fifty are not strong odds. Like his cousins the Tutors, producing a daughter would compel Prince to divorce Cinderella’s head from the rest of her body. Finding marriage and execution to be equally unappealing, Prince does everything he can to drive Cinderella far, far away.

A PRINCESS BECOMES A SOCIALITE

(Picture Princess Diana turning into Paris Hilton.)

Being a princess doesn’t suck. Cinderella embraces her fortune and fame with enthusiasm and turns her crown into a BRAND—fashion, fragrances, jewelry—that spreads faster than the plague. The kingdom, sans Prince, adores her.

Prince wants his playboy life back. He despises sharing the spotlight. Squeezed between his lost popularity and “royal duty,” Prince takes to extreme fox hunting as a hostility hiatus from his parent’s obsession with conception.

Cinderella, who is also a passionate equestrian, captures his attention by being the only person in the kingdom who can bridal his horsemanship. Seeing Cinderella as his equal excites him in a way no woman ever has.

LADY TREMAINE, Cinderella's evil stepmother, smells the foul stench of love. She has Maurice ambush the budding romance, causing Cinderella to fall off a cliff. Princes, in his first ever act of selfless courage, dives after his wife and saves her life—more importantly, he finds his own.

A SOCIALITE SAVES THE KINGDOM

(Imagine Paris Hilton transforming into Grace Kelly.)

Lady Tremaine, desperate to destroy their marriage and usurp the throne, manipulates Prince into a joust with Maurice to defend Cinderella’s honor. Maurice is the kingdom’s reigning champion and a fate worst than death awaits Prince should he lose: the end of the Charming Dynasty.

Despite Cinderella’s pleads that he retreat from what will be certain death, the love he feels for her makes him feel love for the first time in his life. Embraced and empowered by a love he never knew, the Charmings unite to defeat their revolting stepmother and secure their rightful place in the kingdom—happily ever after.
