About Derek

As a 25 year veteran in the communications and media industries, Derek started his career as an intern with ABC Radio Networks marketing department. His internship soon became a position as the Production Manager with ABC Radio Networks International serving Europe, Asia, and Latin America. While at ABC Radio he worked with a number of formats and programs from Radio Disney, Tom Joyner Morning Show, and The Doug Banks Show. He later developed his own show entitled The Hip Hop House Party and was responsible for the cast and entire production including interviewing a host of artists from Ice Cube to The Wayans Brothers to Jay-Z.

After leaving ABC Radio Networks Derek ventured into the hospitality industry in the field of audiovisual with Presentation Services for Starwood Properties. Advancing rapidly from a technician to Director of Audiovisual for the property, He gain invaluable experience communicating with C-level executives. His knowledge and customer service soon had him operating two properties and expanding to a third.

Teaming up with a colleague in 1998 he went on to co-write, co-produce, and co-direct two gospel stage plays one starring 80’s R&B group Yarbrough and Peoples. Both were performed at Dallas’ Majestic Theater and Dallas Convention Center. Praised by The Dallas Morning News as up and comers in theater.

With his thirst to continue growing in media and technology, he began working as Production Manager at AMS Productions, the leading production company in the Southwest at that time. There Derek began to build on his leadership skills with a crew of photogs, audio, and lighting staff working on multiple projects for brands such as Dillards, Electrolux, and Texas Instruments. He also gained experience in live shots, post production, and various satellite feed technologies.

Having an entrepreneurial spirit from a young age, he felt it was time to venture into another industry that brought him full circle, commercial printing. Derek became a graphic design and print broker for Dallas area clubs. After joining forces with a local print firm in the area, He began selling printing and learning the business at the same time. His trial and error meetings prove to be a success as his knowledge of the printing processes grew and so did his clientele. His customer first attitude and integrity built a strong belief in his client that he could deliver.

In April 2005 he started MassFx Creative Services, which is now MassFX Creative Group LLC. Armed with a cutting edge staff of designers, public relations, and marketing creatives as his support partners, he is embarking upon building something truly great offering a number of services from graphic design, web development, event planning and execution to broadcast media strategies and production. From his own words…”keep your support staff on your shoulders instead of you on theirs.”

Always having a love for film, especially science fiction, as well as writing in his free time, he thought it was time to pen his own script and in 2016 began writing, The Richards Experiment. He currently shot a short film prequel and screened it at the Anjelika in Dallas. He’s currently working on securing funding to produce the feature as well as completing two other feature film scripts.
