THE MAGIC SHOES, is a coming of age Sports Fantasy Family Picture. The Underdog Overcomes and Achieves his Dream in the Face of Impossible Odds.
SYNOPSIS:
This story is about a 14 year old boy, our hero, who dreams of becoming a professional baseball player. There is ONE PROBLEM, he is Handicapped. His leg was severely and permanently damaged as a result of a car accident, in which his father was driving. Our hero has another problem as well, the school bully and his gang who cruelly taunts and mimics him incessantly, and even more devastating to our young hero, excludes him from playing sandlot ball with the rest of the neighborhood kids. Equally as devastating in his life are his guilt-ridden parents who each in their own way do more harm than good. A father who blew his chance to play for the LA Dodgers because of his drinking problem and his mother, a religious zealot who believes that only her saints can heal her son.
One day his fate changes when he meets a mysterious and powerful Native American Medicine Man who against his wishes is charmed by the boy to treat his disability with the Medicine Man's ancient tribal remedies. The treatments begin and our hero is catapulted to a spiritual dimension, the "Happy Hunting Ground" where no living creature has set foot in in over a century, a Holy Place that only medicine men had access to. In this mystical universe our hero is on a quest; to find the Great TeePee and be released from his karma. Before that can be achieved however, our hero must meet head-on the challenges set before him and master them, or perish. Think: HARRY POTTER meets THE KARATE KID. At the completion of his first encounter with this new and mysterious dimension, the wise medicine man gives the boy a gift----- A PAIR OF MAGIC SHOES which, the boy is instructed, he must wear for at least 5 minutes every day, and never give them away nor tell anyone about them or they will lose their power, and he will once again become handicapped.
Our hero painfully struggles to build his disabled leg and faces personal setbacks that his nemesis delights in. Finally, by their high school senior year, the hero and the bully are teammates on the baseball team. Each boy is doing so well that both are drafted by two different Triple AAA clubs. Our hero excels setting all sorts of rookie records. The bully on the other hand, underachieves, mainly due to his attitude, and is a major disappointment to his team. He is dropped and becomes so jealous of our hero blaming him and the Medicine Man for his failures, that he barges in on our hero's mentor and at gunpoint demands magic shoes for himself. They clash and during the struggle the medicine man's assistant is seriously wounded. In typical fashion, the bully convinces the police that he was attacked and has the medicine man arrested: "Attempted Murder" charge.
The Bully is confronted by our hero. He confesses the Truth... that the boy’s mentor is indeed innocent but that he will make the attempted murder charge stick unless the hero gives him the magic shoes.
What will our hero do? Will he let his beloved mentor take a rap for a crime he did not commit and continue his phenomenal season? Or will he hand over his precious shoes to the bully, return to being handicapped and lose everything he has struggled for all his life?
