DEEP INSOMNIA

DEEP INSOMNIA
By Luis Diogo

GENRE: Thriller / Suspense, Horror
LOGLINE:

The guilt of a crime committed under extreme pressure doesn't let Steven sleep. When he dreams, he is at the crime scene, but he is the victim! He knows that if he dies in the dream, he will die in reality.

SYNOPSIS:

Steven, 27, visits Chinatown, NY, to write an article. He is inside a Chinese museum when there’s an earthquake. He hides under a very long iron table, which soon becomes a “closed tunnel”. A very dim light allows him to see half of the tunnel. He sees an Asian woman, lying in the middle of the tunnel, with her arms and legs smashed under the debris. She screams in a language he is unable to understand.

Hours later, breathless, desperate and troubled by the ongoing and nerve wrecking screams of the woman, and thinking she is wasting the little oxygen they have left, he kills her by squeezing her neck. He immediately regrets it, but now it’s too late!

A rescue team rescues Steven. When he is leaving the place in an ambulance, he sees an Asian man being rescued from the tunnel. He immediately understands there was a third person in the dark side of the tunnel: a witness!

When Steven returns to Boston, he sees the Victim’s Ghost, which frightens him and causes him to have several accidents that almost kill him – like the one when she appears inside his car.

Meanwhile, the Witness attacks Steven’s father: he ties him up in the tub and opens the hot water so he burns to death. (This way he intends to avenge his mother’s death – she burned to death in the Vietnam War after an attack by American troops).

The investigations on this attempted murder cause the police to start suspecting Steven; if they discover what he did in the tunnel, he will be condemned to prison!

But the worst of all are his nightmares! Each time Steven tries going to sleep, he shows up in the museum and the Victim tries to attack him and kill him. Whenever he wakes up, he feels the same excruciating pain she inflicts on him in his nightmares. Steven seeks a psychologist for help. He also tries to find out who the woman was and sends her family a 10 thousand Dollar check. But the nightmares don’t stop. In each new nightmare, the Victim is closer and closer to killing him and he knows that if she manages to do it, he will also die in real life!

The Witness kills Steven’s best friend, burning him in the tub with boiling water. The police, suspicious, inform Steven they’re autopsying the Victim.

The Witness attacks Steven in his own home. They fight, but the Witness wins. He ties Steven up and puts him in the tub. When he tries opening the tap, he’s electrocuted and dies: Steven had wired the tap to a 500-Watt battery under the tub.

Steven, stuck inside the tub, ends up falling asleep. In his nightmare, he’s inside the tunnel in the Victim’s position. She, on top of him, squeezes his neck just like he did to her! The Psychologist and the Detective find Steven choking to death. They try to wake him but they can’t. The Psychologist yells at Steven telling him the ghost in his nightmares isn’t real; it’s only his feeling of guilt that is creating that nightmare. She tells him the real ghost went to speak to her and told her she didn’t want to hurt Steven. On the contrary, she wanted to thank Steven because when she was in the tunnel with him, she was asking him to kill her; not to save her! She knew her husband and son had been killed in the earthquake and she was in pain, so she wanted to die. The Psychologist’s words wake

Steven up. The Detective knows that Steven killed the woman, but he also heard the Victim

doesn’t want Steven to pay for his crime. Together, they decide to blame the Witness for her death.
