At the height of the Cold War, a CIA Agent turned smokejumper is recruited to pull off the most infamous false flag event in American history, hijacking a 727 to expose a dangerous lack of US airport security.
SYNOPSIS:
FALSE FLAG is a Cold War-era spy thriller that is based on a true story that illuminates the shadowy world of international espionage through the lens of Chris, a low-level CIA Agent living under the guise of being a small-town smokejumper.
The story takes place in the late 1960s and early 70s, a period when international terrorism was on the rise and hijackings were becoming commonplace worldwide.
In September 1970, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), a terrorist group committed to the extermination of Israel, hijacked four European passenger jets before detonating three of them in the Jordanian desert.
The tragic events of 9/11 were still in the distant future, but the CIA understood the peril long beforehand and sought to improve US Airport Security, which was non-existent at the time, in an attempt to prevent future terrorist hijackings on US soil.
Consequently, in 1971, a nefarious plot is hatched when a domineering female CIA operative, Rooney, enlists Chris to pull off a "False Flag" hijacking of a commercial 727 with the intent of spurring congress to enact increased security at US airports.
A seemingly chance meeting at a local bar with a beautiful woman, Bianca, leads Chris into an unexpected romance. However, unbeknownst to him, his new love interest is a PFLP terrorist on a mission to recruit an accomplice to hijack an American commercial airliner to Mexico City.
Chris is soon confronted by FBI Agent "Stone," the leader of a counter-terrorism task force who has been tracking Bianca but is unaware that Chris is a CIA Agent. Suspecting the small-town smokejumper might be involved in a terrorist plot with Bianca, Stone embarks on a mission to stop them.
Stone gives Chris an ultimatum; work with the FBI to help them ascertain Bianca's intentions or face Federal espionage charges. Chris reluctantly accepts, unaware that Stone appointed an undercover FBI Agent, Emma, to infiltrate Chris' life and track his movements.
Chris meets with Rooney and is instructed to keep his CIA identity secret from both the FBI and the PFLP. Rooney orders Chris to play out a ruse intending to use Bianca as a scapegoat for a CIA false flag hijacking.
Now, Chris is faced with the daunting task of surveilling Bianca for the FBI while at the same time planning a hijacking that both the CIA and PFLP want him to execute for vastly different reasons.
Emma's FBI mission to monitor Chris's actions takes a turn when she finds herself falling for the kind-hearted CIA operative, inadvertently subverting Bianca's plan and creating a love triangle. Her allegiances torn, Emma soon becomes Chris' willing accomplice.
Fearing he is a pawn in two separate games, with both sides planning to execute him after the hijacking to ensure his silence, Chris devises an ingenious plan to escape the clutches of the CIA and PFLP with Emma's help.
Trapped between opposing forces, Chris soon finds himself ensnared in the cloak-and-dagger world of international espionage. A world where nothing is what it seems, nobody can be trusted, and the price of failure is certain death.
