An unruly, poor farm girl, desperate to secure her families’ future, seeks passage on a Silk Road Caravan that brings her to the Imperial Palace for the "Daughters Draft," where she risks her life to become the youngest concubine in the Emperor’s harem.
SYNOPSIS:
SERIES PREMIS: Set in The House of Tang in 7th century China, against the backdrop of Silk Road politics and ruthless dynasty building, lives an international set of concubines gifted by their families to the emperor in order to secure acceptance, rank, and recognition. Pitted against each other by international power dynamics and family loyalty, these women all strive to bring their own flair and culture to the forefront.
WU JAO desires the same for herself, but has no advantages, only her wits to rely upon. Each episode challenges her advance through the ranks of Concubine, Empress, and eventually China's first and only female Emperor.
I was curious why the “recorders of history” would fail to memorialize the awe-inspiring accomplishments of the woman who gave birth to the Tang Dynasty and moreover, why 5000 years later women are still struggling for acceptance, rank, and recognition?
