Seph has been a champion of the phenomenon known as House Music all his life: a fan, collector, historian and archivist since the music’s earliest days in the mid-80s, and now one of New York’s most eloquent ambassadors of the real underground sound as an internationally recognized DJ, event organizer, remixer and producer.
Born and raised in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Joseph Valentin was weaned on the sounds of the old school – soul, funk, rock, Latin, new wave, punk, early electronic music and especially, New York’s vibrant underground garage/Loft and dance grooves. But it was the revolutionary sound of House Music, which combined all of these styles and more into a completely new form, that defined his life’s path. The dynamic energy, boundless creativity and life-affirming positivity of that initial House explosion are what Seph has sought to share with people all over the world since that day.
Seph began his journey as a partygoer and dancer, religiously attending the first underground clubs to play House in New York. Eventually his knowledge, passion – not to mention a growing record collection of early Chicago, Detroit, New York and UK house – made a DJ career inevitable. As the New York scene fragmented, he founded a collective with a mission to connect DJs, promoters and fans worldwide in the original spirit of House. Funky Soul Rebels was established in 1994 and soon grew to include members in several US states, the UK and Spain. Over the next decade Seph and FSR became known for hosting some of New York’s most memorable underground parties, including Brooklynite (Williamsbug’s first house weekly) and the Space and Beyond the Dance series. Seph also regularly played the world-famous Turntables on the Hudson and toured the States and Europe.
By 2000, Seph was recording with partner Steven Garcia. As Seph & Ven, they featured on a split EP backed by DIY’s Diggs & Woosh, then released a single on Nickodemus' Rhythm Love Records. The attention received from these tracks and constant touring established Seph as part of the next generation of musicians taking House into a new millennium.
Later, Seph co-founded House Café Music in Spain with longtime partner DJ Ino. House Café counts producers Charles Webster, Vincenzo, Sven Weisemann and Motor City Soul on its artist roster along with Seph, Ino, Steven Garcia and many more.
Seph continues to create, promote and tour from his hometown of New York City, spreading the message of House Music on many fronts. He produces and remixes under the names Dreamer’s Dub and Valentin (with Maya’s DJ Joeski).
His new music collective/Label, Republic Music, partners Seph with Jaymz Nylon, Ino, Holmar Filipsson, Pete Moss, Connie, Max Martinez, Neil Smallridge and other international DJs.
Whether rocking crowds worldwide, organizing memorable events or making beats in the studio, Seph is working to redefine what people think of real House Music.
