As the war deteriorates so does their cause, causing some to find a new path in a morally ambiguous Cold War.
SYNOPSIS:
As the Second World War comes to a close and Germany's defeat appears almost certain, a cadre of young men calling themselves Werewolves continue the fight against the Allies. They consist of the aristocratic Albrecht von Aigner, his second in command Garr von Zell, obedient Jonas Henneman, sociopathic Andreas Preiss, and bookish Gunther Immerding. Guided by the legendary special forces officer Otto Skorzeny, the Werewolves conduct missions to further the war effort, rescuing reprehensible members of the Nazi regime such as Walter Rauff and Alois Brunner from facing war crimes prosecution. During a mission gone bad Jonas is killed by American intelligence awaiting the Werewolves whom are actually recruiting Nazis due to their virulent anticommunist beliefs. Eventually, they discover that they've been working on behalf of American and British intelligence to aid in the ensuing Cold War against international Communism which is taking shape. After confronting Skorzeny, the majority of the Werewolves vote that helping the Western Allies is now the best option. Garr, however, is disgusted and decides to wait out the war on a rural farm with his lover, Magda Getz. But Magda is even more of a Nazi zealot, deciding to kill him for defeatism and take his place as a Werewolf. After joining, the Werewolves travel to a Czech city to meet up with Friedrich Buchardt, commander of an SS death squad, to destroy a Soviet ammunitions dump. After doing so, the ethnic Germans living in the city are blamed for the attack and summarily massacred by the Red Army and Czechs. Amidst all this, Gunther is caring for his grandmother, Gerde, who he has hidden in his attic for years from the Nazi government for her affiliation to Rosa Luxemburg. One day, she sneaks away to experience the outside world and winds up reporting her grandson to Ivan Serov, head of the Soviet secret police in occupied Germany, because of her leftist beliefs and hope that the Russians will grant Gunther immunity. Instead, Serov has Gunther killed under torture and also recruited Andreas to Soviet secret police because of Andreas realizing joining his enemies is the best option. Albrecht discovers this after a mission goes terribly wrong where Magda is separated, enduring a grave injury to her arm. She manages to escape capture due to an abandoned boy and the kindness of a Russian army officer who keeps her true identity hidden, despite being arrested by Soviet secret police for negative views on the war effort. Albrecht, concluding that the war is definitively lost, heads for West Germany. He's nearly captured by Russians for his activities, but is rescued at the last minute by American intelligence. He's blackmailed into being an agent in West German intelligence and works many years for them until he finds Magda by accident, who's been living mostly destitute in large part to being handicapped because of her amputated arm along with the boy who saved her years ago, now a staunch communist. After a fight he leaves her and Albrecht offers to improve her life through covert financial funding he receives to spy on the East. She considers and he departs after reflecting on how things have changed.
