CADENZA

CADENZA
By Mark Nahuysen

GENRE: Thriller
LOGLINE:

In 1955 Paris, a roguish violin shop owner uncovers an old family curse that threatens the life of his new love. To save her, he must find two lost Stradivarius violins, while being forced to reassess his value system.

SYNOPSIS:

Cremona 1705:

COUNT VISCONTI and ENRICO CARBONI visit ANTONIO STRADIVARI to convince

him to sell two iconic violins, named ARTEMIS and APOLLO, to be gifted

to the French king. Stradivari relents, on condition they always be

kept together. Visconti, a practitioner of the dark arts puts a curse

over the violins to ensure this end.

Paris 1955:

ANTON LE MARCHAND owns the Cadenza violin shop, staffed by MILO and

GENIE. Genie is in love with Anton. Anton has great affection for Genie,

but can't commit.

They're visited by MADAME BELGARDE, who gives Anton an old key for a

hidden safe. She leaves them to discover the safe, which contains a BOX

of historic records and a BOOK. The book tells of the violins, the

curse, and how their family was drawn into it in 1705, and its

unfortunate consequences.

Paris 1705:

HUGO LE MARCHAND, his fiancée ADELINE, friend GUSTAV, and chaperone

MADAME BELGARDE, (all the SAME ACTORS as 1955), are sent by Hugo's

father to regional France, to collect the two Stradivarius violins,

which were stranded on their way to Paris. Hugo is warned by Carboni

that any mishaps with the violins will unleash the Visconti curse. But

an error of judgment by Hugo leads to the loss of one violin, thus

activating the curse. From now on, every firstborn son in the Le

Marchand line will lose their first love to early death - until the

violins are reunited. Adeline is the first, killed when the violins are

separated. Blaming herself, Madame Belgarde prays for redemption.

Back in 1955 with the curse revealed, Anton refuses to believe it. Genie

and Milo realize that it jeopardizes Genie's life, should Anton return

her love. Clues from the box incite Anton to search for the violins, as

he is almost bankrupt. This leads him to deserted mother, Monique, who

has a violin, not realizing it's the Apollo. Anton is smitten, which

activates the curse, endangering her.

The evil descendant of CARBONI (same actor) arrives, intent on stealing the violins.

Finally convinced of the curse, Anton realizes he must now unite the

violins to save Monique. Genie agonizes over Anton falling for another.

In a love complication, Milo and Monique begin to fall for each other.

A game of cat and mouse ensues, as the parties contend for the violins

before someone dies. The Madame Belgarde, who visited the shop earlier,

turns out to be the same person from 1705, resurrected, according to her

earnest prayer. She wants to help Anton and Genie fulfill the vow of

love that Hugo and Adeline could not. (Remember, they're the same

actors.) We learn more of Anton's past, and the deep family issues that

have affected him and his value system.

A confrontation in the Paris catacombs make Anton realize his true love

for Genie, as opposed to his temporal crush on Monique. But this now

turns the curse toward Genie!

The climax takes place in the shop, with Carboni intent on murder. Here,

a heroic act by Genie's seals Anton's love for her. The violins are

united, and the curse is ended, freeing the couples to their respective

loves.

The couples walk off into the night, watched by redeemed Madame

Belgarde, from the cathedral above, where it's revealed she will see out

her days as a nun.
