ANKA NOWICKI, twenty-one, from the small Pennsylvania town of Greensburg, is a college student attending Sheedy University in Philadelphia on a full scholarship, hoping to one day work in a major city, such as New York. After LANCE MILLER, her boyfriend, breaks up with her at the end of her junior school year, Anka is notified both her parents have died in an automobile accident. As the only child, Anka receives everything her poor parents owned, including their run-down home and the small business of Nowicki Billboards, which consists of only a handful of billboard locations on a small stretch of highway. During the summer break, Anka must decide whether to continue running the small business by herself or sell the company and devote her time to graduating college. While Anka runs the business solo during the summer, RALPH MORETTI, twenty three, who notices a billboard on the highway that says “Available,” calls the number listed, wanting to know what Anka looks like and when he could take her out on a date. Anka explains the sign posting meant the billboard was available for use, was not an invitation to date, and hangs up on an obvious idiot. Later, Ralph arrives at the office of Nowicki Billboards to meet Anka. As they argue, Ralph explains he is not there to pursue romance, but that he works for his family-run business of Moretti Pizzeria, and has been asked by his father to purchase ad space on the billboard he saw available because, ironically, it was an exit away from the pizza business. Just then, Lance arrives at Nowicki Billboards to try to correct his mistake of breaking up with Anka. In response, Anka announces that Ralph is her new boyfriend and for Lance to go away. After Lance leaves, Ralph asks Anka to accompany him to the pizzeria for dinner and to meet his family. Anka explains to Ralph she just used his presence at the office to get rid of Lance. Ralph promises it's just business. Anka and Ralph go to Moretti Pizzeria to discuss the billboard rental. Anka meets TONY and BIANCA MORETTI, Ralph’s parents, and finds them to be uneducated, like Ralph, but kind and family-oriented, even though they mistakenly believe Ralph has brought her to the restaurant as both a representative of Nowicki Billboards, as well as his new girlfriend. Later, during various business encounters between Anka and Ralph, Lance shows up to try to break up a relationship that doesn’t exist, while Ralph plays along and even defends Anka when Lance loses control. During these encounters, Anka begins to wonder if she is falling in love with a man who isn’t the sharpest pencil in the box. During his time with Anka, Ralph considers that he may have found the love of his life. Their friendship becomes a romance that leads to Anka having to decide if being with Ralph is worth her abandoning her chance to pursue a career in a major city.
