An American scientist, tasked with judging the safety of holding the Tokyo Olympics miles away from the earthquake and tsunami-ravaged nuclear plant in Fukushima, gets tangled in a web of corruption and revenge as her corporate hosts try to cover up radioactive contamination and vengeful spirits hunt down those responsible.
SYNOPSIS:
Soon after a manager from the Dai-Ichi Nuclear Power Plant in Japan dies during a mysterious, ghostly encounter at a shrine, Georgia Tech nuclear physics Professor Jane Penn is hired to determine whether radiation levels are safe enough to hold the Tokyo Olympics down the coast from the plant. Penn gets the life-changing call when she is at a collegiate swimming competition with her 6-year-old son, who is fed up with all the time she spends at work.
On the international flight and bullet train ride, Penn experiences nightmares that blur the lines between waking reality and supernatural visions of the tragic Fukushima earthquake and her mother’s suicide. Meeting her host, Masashi Endo, she discovers the new plant manager is rude and ill-tempered to others while keeping his calm with her. Before getting to the power plant, her eyes are opened to ongoing consequences of the earthquake and tsunami. A hotel clerk talks about recent deaths at the plant, and Penn unknowingly meets the ghost of a tsunami victim who tells her about the tragic impact of continuing radiation problems at the power plant.
As Penn collects data during the nuclear power plant inspection, Endo is haunted by malevolent ghosts. Both Endo and Penn then meet the ghost of Kasumi Mizuno, who appears as she did before dying from cancer caused by radiation from the plant. Though Endo and Penn believe she is their interpreter, her true purpose is to guide Endo into a fatal trap. Endo’s behavior at the plant becomes more and more suspicious as he tries to steer Penn away from dangerous findings. Due to his machinations, Penn decides she must return the next day to collect more data. Until then, Kasumi arranges a dinner and round of night golf for Penn and Endo at a course he thought had closed down. He picks up Bianca Fox, British international relations manager from the electric company, to help him influence Penn’s report. Before dinner, Penn has a contentious call with her father, Dr. James Penn, a well-known scientist who was responsible for designing plutonium weapons at a U.S. factory that was closed down over radioactive waste dumping. He also tries to convince her not to report dangerous conditions. Though Kasumi warns Penn not to go to the golf course, Penn doesn’t want to miss the opportunity to try night golf in Japan.
Penn and her two hosts enjoy dinner in a deserted country club, where more ghosts from the Mizuno family reveal themselves to Endo and Fox. While getting ready for golf, Fox works on Penn, trying to become close friends so she can take her out late into the night and influence the report. Spooky visions and sounds at the start of their golf game quickly turn into a creepy attack on Endo, who escapes but not for long. Fox is killed when an array of stadium lights crushes her in a golf cart. Next, Endo drowns in a watery sand trap. Penn escapes the haunted country club, and almost drowns in a river, but is saved by the ghostly tsunami victim.
A year later, Penn’s report of dangerous conditions at the plant combined with recommendations for repairs are making it safe enough to allow the Olympics to happen on schedule. Back at the university, she receives a call from her father who tells her he is with a former colleague, who he thought had died from leukemia, at a bar he thought was closed down. Penn recognizes her father’s situation but can do nothing about it.
