THE LUCKY ONES

THE LUCKY ONES
By Mark Ferland

GENRE: War, Drama
LOGLINE:

On the brink of despair, a war-haunted veteran’s life hinges on a chance encounter with a stranger in their darkest hour.

SYNOPSIS:

After surviving a deadly ambush in Iraq that decimates his unit, an army veteran carries the weight of survival back home, his soul scarred by the unseen wounds of war. The specter of his fallen comrades haunts him, their absence a constant reminder of what he perceives as the cruel fortune of the living: a life mired in physical and psychological torment, with therapy sessions offering brief respite. To him, death on the battlefield would have been a merciful end, sparing him the relentless struggle to find a semblance of purpose in a life forever altered. He yearns for the front lines, believing only in the battlefield’s finality, not the possibility of recovery.

However, fate intervenes and leads him into an unexpected encounter with a drunken man outside a liquor store. Both men being arrested marks an unforeseen turning point following the ensuing fight. The next day, the drunk reveals his sobriety was hanging by a thread before the altercation; the fight prevented a relapse that might have led to tragic consequences. This revelation, coupled with an invitation to an AA meeting, becomes the veteran’s lifeline.

In the shared stories and struggles of the AA meetings, the veteran encounters a transformative realization: the act of surrender, not to despair, but to the possibility of healing and helping others. Through the recovery journey, he realizes the profound truth of life’s essence, overcoming trials and finding purpose after trauma. He learns that a happy life doesn’t come from fighting for everything he wants but from surrendering, and learning to accept what he already has.

THE LUCKY ONES grows into a heartwarming tale of redemption, connection, and unforeseen blessings. The veteran, once convinced that those who died were the fortunate, now grasps the precious opportunity to live a meaningful life beyond the battlefield. This story is a tribute to the resilience of the human spirit, highlighting the veteran’s realization that he, too, is one of ‘The Lucky Ones’—not because he would have died on the battlefield, but because he embraced the journey toward a life worth living, a life rich with purpose and the chance to illuminate the path for others.
