About Valerie

Let’s tell better stories and tell stories better.

I love bringing stories into focus as a screenwriter, script reader, script consultant, and story analyst. I'm passionate about thrillers, sci-fi, and challenging gender stereotypes and the portrayals of people with disabilities.

I've built my foundation for storytelling on 10+ years of experience as an award-winning crime journalist. Since then, I've written, produced, and directed the short film "The Guardian" (2011). I've also co-written the feature film screenplay "New London," in production with Westerfield Studios, and I'm a writer and producer on the "StoryStruck" podcast, currently in development.

As a script reader and consultant, I have evaluated screenplays for the Austin Film Festival's screenwriting contest, the BlueCat Screenwriting Competition, Coverfly, individuals, and production companies, such as 3rd Herd Films and Show Me the Money Productions. I've also volunteered with the Sunscreen Film Festival, one of a handful nationwide to be sponsored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and I advise writers monthly via Screenwriters of Tomorrow, a Tampa-area screenwriting group that provides table reads and constructive coverage.

In addition, I'm a film and culture writer. I wrote the book "Quicklet on 'The Closer' (Season 1)" (San Francisco: Hyperink, 2012) about the groundbreaking TNT crime drama starring Kyra Sedgwick. It's available on . My work also appears at In Their Own League, , Bright Wall/Dark Room, The Guardian, The Hollywood Reporter, Film Racket, The Script Lab, ScreenCraft, Final Draft, and other publications. I'm a member of the Alliance of Women Film Journalists and a certified critic on RottenTomatoes.
