About Cody

When he’s not running, riding his bike, or exploring the wilderness, Cody Westheimer is racking up credits as diverse as they are interesting. To date, he’s amassed nearly 150 hours of music for feature films, documentary series, and iconic sports events such as the Tour de France on NBC. The composer for the recently released BBC/PBS Nature special H is for Hawk: A New Chapter, the IMAX film Journey to Space 3D, and the Discovery Channel’s Tiburones: Sharks of Cuba, his main theme for the 2007 game The Golden Compass was nominated for a Game Audio Network Guild Track of the Year Award.

An avid craftsman, Westheimer has built many items at his New West Studios compound in Los Angeles. His studio desk is made out of reclaimed lumber and, most recently, he built a portable music studio out of typical road-case materials, which was profiled by Mix magazine and in a mini-documentary for Outside TV’s Dispatches.

In addition to his career as a composer and being a dad to his daughter and two dogs, Westheimer enjoys photographing with his Canon 5D, making short films (often with his DJI drone), and playing lesser-played instruments such as the banjo and Japanese shakuhachi.

Unique traits: My reputation is for big inspiring music (like the Tour de France theme) and post-rock influences, but I love folksy music and thinking outside of the box with all genres of film.

  • How Jack Became Black

Film (Documentary) Composer The births of Jack and June, the third multiracial generation in filmmaker Eli Steele's family, coincided with a startling projection: by 2050, at least 20% of all Americans will self-identify as two or more races. What will this mean in a nation tormented by race? Born black, Jewish and deaf, Steele battled childhood bullying. Then, as an adult, he battled identity politics in both education and employment. He believed that holding onto his individuality, rather than his skin color, was part of America's promise to him. However, Steele's belief in this promise was shaken when his son was denied entrance to a public school for refusing to name his "primary race." Why does race still matter so much? To find out, Steele journeys into uncharted territory where he takes on identity politics through interviews with multiracial individuals and through thoughtful re-examinations of headline controversies -- the George Zimmerman trial, a conference on white privilege, and the DeBlasio ...
