About Kayla

Kayla Emter was born and raised in Bismarck, North Dakota and graduated from Columbia College Chicago with a BA in film. Wanting to continue honing her craft she moved to Los Angeles to attend the American Film Institute, with a specialty in Film Editing. Following her time at AFI, Kayla began her career as an assistant editor working on such acclaimed films as Casey Affleck’s I’m Still Here starring as well as the romantic comedy Something Borrowed directed by Luke Greenfield.

Emter’s first break came on the film Gone, where, having been elevated to additional editor, she was given the opportunity to show off her editing ability. Working with editor John Axelrad she co-edited James Grey’s Cannes film The Immigrant distributed by The Weinstein Company and then worked with Axelrad again on Don Cheadle’s critically acclaimed Miles Davis biopic, Miles Ahead which premiered at multiple film festivals including Sundance and was picked up by Sony Pictures Classics.

Kayla went on to cut the most recent Lorene Scafaria dramedy The Meddler, which premiered at TIFF and starred Susan Sarandon, J.K. Simmons and Rose Byrne. After completing that film, Emter went to help out on the Sundance film The Land directed by Steven Caple Jr. as well as the Karen Moncrief directed film The Keeping Hours from Blumhouse and Universal.

Kayla just wrapped Lake Bell’s sophomore directorial feature What’s The Point? Which starred Lake Bell, Ed Helms and Mary Steenburgen.
