As Elio Flops, Pixar Exec Admits It's a 'Rough Time' to Make Original Films, but Alternative Is 'Making Toy Story 27'
The film seems to be getting mixed reviews. Some loving it, some calling the narrative flat. I am going to watch it for myself because sometimes it's the audience that went in expecting something else and score films poorly for not meeting their expectations. I have none, so I am going in fresh.
Have you seen it? What are your thoughts?

I haven't seen it Kevin Jackson but I read an interesting article about Pixar's struggle with original content since "Coco" while their sequels continue to do well. https://variety.com/2025/film/box-office/elio-box-office-flop-pixar-orig...

I plan on watching Elio, Kevin Jackson. I like the Animation style. I think Elio might be struggling at the box office because Lilo & Stitch is in theaters at the same time, and both movies are similar (maybe not the stories, but they're both about kid humans with alien creature sidekicks), so people might not want to see two films that are so similar.

Yeah, it's a dilemma with animation and live action. When you do something new it has no track record and people are guarding their spending these days due to the hard times. Gone are the days when you would just go see whatever is showing, so people want to know they are going to enjoy the film before they even see it.
I love original content but sometimes they are huge misses, and I don't have the time to watch a bunch of misses. At the same time I don't want to watch only regurgitated content. Granted I will go watch another Mission Impossible in a heart beat.
I hope Elio picks up and becomes a late success like Elemental.

Pixar was the studio that broke the Disney formula and eventually fell into its own, so if something they create breaks that, they are either disappointing fans who are expecting it or not attracting potential fans to see it, because they are expecting it.
