I've been interested in joining the DGA (Directors guild of America) and would like to become a member in the next couple of years if possible. However, after going through the site I'm a little lost as to where exactly the procedure to become a member starts. According to the site, an application will be sent to become a member once a CPLF (commercial project listing form) confirms employment in a DGA-covered category. It could be the wording or maybe I'm misreading something but what exactly am I missing to begin the process? In other words, where do I start so I could go through the application process? Thank you anyone, for your time for answering this post.

Where you start is getting hired to direct a movie. DGA-covered categories are also the AD group and production managers so many people start there; get hired as a PA, work up to Second Second, then Second, then First. Build a resume and a good reputation and then get hired on a Guild movie - usually back to the Second Second job. Production managers are also represented by the DGA. Joining isn't a matter of filling out paperwork. You need to be a working director. You've set yourself a goal of a couple of years; that's good. Direct a few no budget films, work your way up to a few non-guild low/medium budget and you'll get the reputation of a good, creative director. A producer may then hire you to direct a guild project.
