I used to help set up concerts at a legendary San Diego venue called 4th and B—a place now gone, demolished in 2022, but very much alive in my memories. It was there I helped prepare the stage for musical giants: David Byrne, Lou Reed, John Lee Hooker, Warren Zevon, Missing Persons, and Living Colour. I was never just a bystander. I was part of the rhythm, the electricity, the energy behind the curtain.
But one night stands out above all.
Los Lobos were playing. I met them in the parking lot and got several albums autographed. Just as they were getting ready to head inside, I quietly began to walk away—I didn’t have money for a ticket.
That’s when Sandra Rosas, wife of Cesar Rosas, stopped me. “Where are you going?” she asked. I explained my situation. She didn’t hesitate. She took me by the arm and said, “You’re with us.”
She walked me in, hand in hand with the band.
Just a few days later, Sandra was tragically murdered.
Her kindness didn’t just give me a night of music. It gave me something far deeper—a moment of grace I’ve never forgotten.
That’s why I wrote Sandra Rosas into my animated series, What the Mack? Not as a celebrity. As a real person. A woman of warmth, joy, and light. A soul who truly saw people.
I doubt many here know her story the way I do. But I believe kindness leaves echoes. This is mine.
