Composing : Tin/Penny Whistle by Joel Irwin

Tin/Penny Whistle

The Tin Whistle (also known as a Penny Whistle) was the instrument we hear in soundtracks such as Titanic. Does anyone have a sample set that included this instrument? Either the instrument by itself or as part of a set of Ethnic Winds? If so, what vendor/product?

Jonathan Price

There's Soundiron's Irish Penny Whistle for $5. It sounds pretty much the same as if I were to play my penny whistle, which is nothing fancy (although it has pre-recorded phrases). For $20, you can get Embertone's Shire Whistle, which has true legato and glisses and sounds like a player far better than I. You need the full version of Kontakt for both. There's also Impact Soundworks' Ventus Tin Whistle, which I don't own, but the demos sound amazing.

I was looking at and considering Ventus. But it is just under $100. Will I get the same functionality and sound from Embertone's? I have full Kontakt since my primary symphonic package is Cinesamples.

I asked the director if he was OK with the tin whistle sound since this is a film about an old 'captain' who has passed on, and the director is very enthusiastic. Those are the types of customers that motivate me. :)

Can't really say since I don't own Ventus. I like the Shire Whistle quite a lot, but it looks like Ventus may give you more control over articulations and more RR's. I actually tend to use Eduardo Tarilonte's ERA II - Medieval Legends "Whistle" simply because it programs better for my WX-5 (electronic wind instrument) and my performance sounds more realistic. But the ornaments don't translate to the WX5 very well, so I've got the Shire Whistle if I have a piece that's ornament-heavy.

Well here is some data to help. I have an "Alexa" browser extension, so I can tell relatively speaking which web sites get more traffic than others (with the top three sites being google, youtube, and facebook respectively). Embertone is 386,052 and Ventus is 241,026.

BTW, this site, stage32, is 11,196 and soundcloud (where many composers park their music) is 111.

Awesome! I love my ethnic winds when I go out to eat. I could go deeper but no ove the Tin Whistle of the Titanic soundtrack. I'm a comedic writer so I stopped myself. Much love
