SAG union discussion

Anyone know how many Union shoots you have to be in (I am a rescue diver and make sure that the stunt man does not get hurt while making jumps into water) to get into SAG or other union? or is my job to niche to get a union position?

David Trotti

You can join SAG-AFTRA as soon as you are hired as a performer on a SAG-AFTRA show. Extras can join after getting three SAG-AFTRA vouchers (which is harder to do than it sounds). As a rescue diver, you should send your resume to Stunt Coordinators. The Divers on the stunt team on a SAG-AFTRA show should all be SAG AFTRA hires. Much rarer instances of divers on shows include water safety for the crew. I don't think there's an IATSE local for that, and my recollection is they're mostly professional vendors under contract with the company. Be aware, the initiation fee for SAG-AFTRA is currently $3,000.

What do you hope that a SAG card will do for you? In your chosen role as diver, is a production company on a union shoot required to use a union diver or just one with the proper certs.?

Royce Allen Dudley

Stunt coordinators and stunt performers are SAG. But you are a safety diver... for now...

Regina Wills

Ok, I have a question about that, so I have to get a SAG -AFRA job even though I am not SAG-AFRA to be a member? Or do I have to be part of a production that hires SAG and non-SAG actors?

Dave McCrea

Yes.
