Hey guys, I'm an aspiring director looking to gain experience and a solid body of work. I've been thru film school and continue to study and learn more about the craft every single day, but I'm having trouble getting projects off the ground. I've tried writing my own stuff but I just can't seem to find the patience to sit at a desk and write (plus everything I do write just seems to be a bad regurgitation of something I've recently read or watched). I've tried looking for scripts written by other writers but I always struggle to find something that appeals to my style. I want to be out there making films but I'm not really sure how to find the right project. Am I just being impatient? Should I just go out and direct bad scripts just to build my on set experience? Do I just need to buck up and write my own stuff? I know there are plenty of directors out there who aren't writers but how do they find good material to direct? Any advise here would be greatly appreciated! Thanks Guys, Dylan

Dylan, I´m not a filmmaking expert, but I know something about people. :) You seem to be an active person, that's your style. You also seem to be a social person, not a loner worker, that's why you're asking for advise. I think you'd work better with a team. Why not beginning by telling people what you like, your ideas? That way it'll be easier to find the right team for your peojects. Good luck. Ana Gabriela

Do not direct bad scripts. You will always struggle to find something that appeals to your style. All directors do. That's why they read hundreds of scripts. Read five a week. Every week. If in three months (that's 60 scripts) you don't find even one that appeals to then read ten a week for the next three months. You don't think finding the right project was going to be easy did you?
Thanks for the advice guys! D Marcus, I'd love to be reading more scripts but I'm having a hard time getting my hands on them; although I've been getting to read more since I've been active on here. Any advice on how to get more scripts in the old inbox?

You have to reach out. Writers are desperate to get their work read. Stage32 is a great place as you have found out. There are many other writers forums. Search for them, become a member, talk with writers. There are the peer review sites. Sign up and read scripts. You may have to offer several reviews. You're in Los Angeles - writers are everywhere. There are several dozen managers based in L.A. who will be thrilled to offer their clients work to you to read. Not agents - managers.
Makes sense. Thanks for all the words of wisdom. Now to find the needle in the haystack.

Exactly, Dylan. That's why agents, directors, producers, prodCo's, development exec's have those dreaded "readers". Finding that needle in the haystack is a full time job in itself.
