It sometimes feels like the eternal question without a definitive answer every filmmaker asks herself/himself at some point, when dreaming of making a feature film. Mentorless.com put together a list of 20 filmmakers, from George Lucas to Damien Chazelle who made a feature based on an often eponym short film. http://www.mentorless.com/2015/06/08/to-short-or-not-to-short-20-filmmak...

To Short or Not to Short? I've a meeting this morning - so no time now. An extremely important question that really needs serious discussion - I'll be back this afternoon.
I went from feature to short, but more for purpose of launching the feature. It seems like when everything is visual, it requires a visual calling card. With so many venues including web-episodes, it lends itself to many morphs that break the traditional feature/short mold.
Sorry not to get back to you but when I realized that it’s just a link to someone else’s article, there’ s no reason for me to respond. Let me know if you’d like to start a thread on the value of shorts in today’s filmmaking world.
Hi Doug, I'm just trying to bring some great content into this lounge so people can learn and start discussions :)
Shannon – the article you refer to is historically interesting but of limited value to aspiring screenwriters/filmmakers in that it really doesn’t get into the basic nuts & bolts of why shorts are such very critical career incubators in our present filmmaking environment. That’s a discussion I’ll gladly participate in (or start if you’d like) in this open forum. Let me know – I’m old enough to have experienced some filmmaking history myself.
