Do-It-Yourself Digital Distribution Platforms

Great list here by PBS of VOD services besides Amazon, Netflix, etc. Has anyone tried Distrify, I'm thinking of trying them? http://www.pbs.org/pov/filmmakers/resources/diy-digital-distribution-pla...

Great advice Robin, thank you. I will try to find more conventional distribution first then use this as plan B or in addition to if allowable. My idea is that in my documentary, some of the experts I interviewed have large followings online and might be willing to embed the film on their websites.

So The problem of doing it yourself on digital distribution would be to get people to go to your website so they can buy the film... Having a distributor, how would he get the people to buy the film digitally?

This is a problem a friend ran into recently - he landed a distributor who got his doc on ESPN, he isn't happy with the trickle of revenue from that deal. Now he can't self distribute due to his contract with the distributer. So, filmmakers, make sure to negotiate a non-exclusive license. Amazon just opened up their platform without the big upfront fees, but takes 50%.

None taken Robin :) what I meant to say is make sure you reserve certain channels if you think you can do better in those. You make a really good point in that distribution is a full-time job and a filmmaker should make sure they really have the skill/time to do that. I totally agree about Amazon or iTunes, especially Amazon prime where were talking about pennies in most cases. Thank you for your reply to my post, there is a lot of great information for filmmakers. I hope they will read this.

In terms of self distribution, are there some out of the box solutions that help you gate content? How to you handle streaming vs download?

Rafael Pinero

Robin, as a distributor how do you handle digital distribution?

Rafael Pinero

You're right Robin, let me rephrase the question, when you acquire a film for distribution, let's say the rights for all TV Windows and digital distribution, but no theatrical. I suppose you sell the film for TV and you keep like 25% from that transaction, regarding the digital platforms what percentage do you keep as a distributor? and once the film is on the platforms, how do you let the audience know as a marketing strategy (if there is one) that the film is available in the digital platforms so it sells and makes money for you and the producer.

Rafael Pinero

You're right Robin, sorry I hadn't seen that post.
