Substack: Viable option for screenwriters?

I know there's a lot of debate around this newsletter platform, Substack. https://substack.com Its paying some writers big bucks to join the service and get their followers to come along with them. The basic idea is is you create a newsletter, engage your followers, and at some point in time you can charge them for access to private communications curated by you. Does it sound like Patreon? Yes, yes it does. Is it a viable option for writers to engage more with potential investors, crowdsource to fund a project, etc? You tell me your thoughts.

With Substack, anyone can start a publication that combines a personal website, blog, and email newsletter or podcast. It's quick and simple, so you don't have to be tech savvy. Your audience can pay…

I had not heard of Substack, thanks for sharing! I'm not sure any of those platforms are good for finding investors but definitely great for curating an audience. The question is - what does the interactivity look like - without that component, none of the options seem likely effective.

Casey Bowker

From what I can see, it's all about that interactivity. You can comment on the newsletter and the creators can respond back. A lot of them also host zooms and there's the interaction there as well. As opposed to Patreon where you are supporting people but without a discord or chat feature, you're basically just having a transactional relationship as opposed to interactive relationship.

Hi Casey, I am familiar with substack but allow me to ask - how would you benefit from it as a screenwriter, exactly? It is true that you can make money if your (paid) newsletter does well, but how could a screenwriter make the most out of this platform? Would you share your scripts? Write exclusive stories?

Casey Bowker

Alicia Sekhri I think you'd likely share parts of your scripts or at least the screenwriting process in general. I think people want to support creators and do things that they can't/won't/want to do. You could do what some of the creators do by holding zoom sessions with followers and maybe going so far as getting gig helping them with ghostwriting/creating their own projects. I see a lot of possibilities in the platform as far as pushing yourself and others creatively
