Hello Stage 32, I hope everyone has a very MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY HOLIDAYS! Here is a great article for anyone that is currently, or seeking to be a sound designer in the film industry. A lot of useful information to take away from here, and what stood out to me is "reputation" This is a focal point to me in this industry. A lot of my work has come from recommendations from previous directors I've worked with. If you make your goal to give them the best you can give to help fulfill their vision, they will not only return to you, but they will recommend your service to other filmmakers.
In my beginning stages, I truly wanted to be a sound designer. I am a certified electronics engineer, and used to build circuit boards for Apache Helicopters. This kind of work became so redundant, so I shifted my focus on working in the film industry. I took a huge pay cut to do it, and pushed really hard to hone my craft. It's literally like climbing a mountain, and the peak becomes more visible by the day depending on how many steps you take.
"When you’re the sound designer on a documentary I think you’re in many ways the ears of the director." - Peter Albrechtsen
This is so true. A documentary I am currently mixing was picked up by Reelz called The Guest List. This is my first documentary, and I can honestly say I enjoy it just as much as other genre of films. The sound design felt more relaxed, because there is much less than other films, so it gives you time to focus more on using the best sonic options. You are the directors ears, but I would say this goes for all genre of films, not just documentaries. I hope you take away something useful from this article!

Karen "Kay" Ross Thanks Kay, HNY!
Stephen Katz For sure! Unless we are dealing with the abstract, which I love to do when the opportunity in a film arises. I agree, everything organic has a specific character when it relates to sound.
@Sam Chambliss Glad you can pull something from them, I will continue to find the best data I can.
Congrats on working your first documentary! All the best for the New Year!
