Agree with Vassilas. Best to bring on people who know their particular jobs. Having said that, since you didn't state that you're directing, its kind of up to your director. Producing is interesting because it's the only job where you hire your own boss in a way. Your job, once the director is onboard is to support his or her vision. As far as locations, your director will have a look in mind that corresponds with whatever description (if any) is in the screenplay. You'll have to scout (or recce if you're in the U.K.), and then when the options (cost/availability/aesthetic) have been narrowed down, you'll deliver location agreements which need to be signed and, if your budget supports it, some sort of payment that has been previously agreed upon in the contract. For casting, it's the same thing. your director will have a look or type in mind that corresponds with whatever description (if any) is in the screenplay. You'll set up casting sessions, where the actors can read from sides (selections of scenes from the script), or something you've asked them to prepare. Once you've narrowed the top roles to a handful of people, you may want to do "chemistry reads" where you pair up the various actors and see how they fit. I think that answered your initial questions. Message back if you have more.
